Difference Between Magnetic And Electronic Stud Finders

If you want to hang your shelf on the wall, you can either secure the shelf using an anchor or you can simply fasten it into a vertical wall stud.

If you don’t know what a wall stud is. It is simply the upright 2×4 wood framing, which make up the frame of the house. Not everyone needs to locate the stud in the wall, but it is sometimes necessary to find when there is the need to hang items on the wall or ceiling in the home.

Types of Wall Stud Finders

  1. The Electronic stud finders are the easiest to use when it comes to detecting a stud in the wall. These electronic devices work by measuring the density of that portion of the wall, so when they come in contact with an area with high density, they give indications.
  2. The magnetic stud finder is the inexpensive alternative and it makes use of magnets to detect the presence of nails and other metals in the wall. They are mostly functional for basic activities. Another important use of the device is that it is being utilized to detect metal conduits and pipes within the wall.

Pros:

  • They are ideal to detect studs that are not so deep into the wall
  • They are used without batteries and so easy to use
  • The designs are mostly compact as they do not have mechanical assembling. And can easily fit into the pocket or pouch.
  • It comes in handy when there is the need to detect screws and nails in wooden studs

Cons

  • They may sometimes be cumbersome when used on the wall of modern buildings with standards.
  • They may not give precise location of the studs as they are designed to only detect metal objectsattached to the studs.

 

Electronic Stud Finder

Pros

  • The device uses sensor to detect the presence of studs within the wall
  • More accurate readings are taken when dialectic changes in the wall are detected with the device
  • They can scan as deep as 3’’ into the wall for a more precise probe.

Cons

  • They are quite expensive
  • For their dependence on batteries, the device can be prone to having downtime
  • They are quite sophisticated and may require that the handler understands and meets the guidelines to be able to use the device.
  • Quite bulky and may not fit in to a small space

The preference attached to both the electronic and magnetic stud finder will depend on the nature of work to be carried out within the space. Electronic devices are more precise in their probing and are therefore preferred by most technicians.
